Greater Bay Area Gains Attention
On 19-20 May, a forum on the economy and development of the Greater Bay Area, entitled “New Era, New Economy, New Finance”, was held in Shenzhen. The event was co-organised by CUHK-Shenzhen, CUHK Business School, the China Financial Forum and the Shenzhen Finance Institute. As a platform for intellectual stimulation and thought leadership, the forum hosted over 20 distinguished speakers. Academics, government officials, and economic and financial executives explored approaches to innovation in China, and discussed the leading role of the Greater Bay Area in the Chinese economy. Innohub to Promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship
On 12 May, CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute launched its Entrepreneurship & Innovation Hub (Innohub) for promoting collaboration between Hong Kong- and mainland-based academics and enterprises. An “Asset Management and Investment” forum, hosted by the institute and organised by CUHK Business School’s Shenzhen Alumni Association, attracted over 200 participants. Prof. Christopher Cheng, Director of the Shenzhen Research Institute, elaborated on the Innohub vision and aim of driving innovation and entrepreneurship in research and knowledge exchange for the betterment of Greater China and the world. Homes Are Where His Heart Is
Following a rewarding 30-year career with Sun Hung Kai Properties, Michael Wong (BBA in Finance 1977; MBA 1984) finds meaning in retirement through community service. As Non-Executive Director of the Urban Renewal Authority, Michael makes use of his experience in real estate to help rebuild old districts and solve the youth housing issue. His proudest achievements include leading the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association’s revitalisation of Mei Ho House in Sham Shui Po – the same area where Michael lived as a boy, growing up in a cubicle home. A New Era in CSR
Socially responsible investment is on the rise among investors, according to Prof. Cao Jie, Associate Professor in the Department of Finance, speaking at the China Business Knowledge luncheon “How CSR Changes Our Behaviour and Society”, on 15 May. Ms. Diana Tsui, Head of Global Philanthropy, Asia Pacific at J.P. Morgan, shared details of her company’s programmes to provide workplace skills training to underprivileged individuals, in hopes of creating economic opportunities leading to a better quality of life for people around the world. Two Business School Teams Conquer Gobi Challenge

The 13th Xuan Zang Road International Business School Gobi Challenge was held from 2 to 5 May. Nearly 3,000 students, alumni and faculty members of MBA and EMBA programmes across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, France and the US took part, trekking across a 114-kilometre stretch of Gobi desert. For the first time, the seasoned CUHK EMBA (Chinese) Program team was joined by their fellows from the MBA Program in Finance (FMBA). Prof. Kalok Chan, Dean of CUHK Business School, made the trip to the desert to cheer on the CUHK contestants. Read more here.
Taiwan Alumni Post-AGM Feast
Over 80 alumni and guests attended an AGM and lunch at Taipei’s Grand Hotel on 29 April, organised by the CUHK Business School’s Taiwan Alumni Association. Special guests from the Business School included Prof. Waiman Cheung, Executive Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business; Prof. Timon Du of the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics; and Ms. Florence Lai, Director of the Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office. The lunch’s highlights were the inaugural performance by a quartet comprising an erhu, flute, pipaand guzheng all made from liuli (coloured crystal), and a surprise birthday celebration for Prof. Du. On 9 April, Mr. Christopher Hui, Managing Director and Head of Project Management for Market Development at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, delivered a talk entitled “The Evolution of the Hong Kong Capital Market: Past, Present and Future”. Organised by the MBA Alumni Association, the event was attended by over 40 MBA alumni from different generations. Mr. Hui’s penetrating insights on the evolution of cross-border integration generated enthusiastic discussions among the audience. Please read more here.
