Welcoming Alumni Back Home!

On 1 April, over 40 mainland and Hong Kong alumni returned to their alma mater for an Alumni Homecoming Seminar, organised by the Alumni and Corporate Affairs Office. Hosted by Business School Dean Professor Kalok Chan, the event served as a thought leadership platform, merging networking, learning and sharing. After talks from three professors, the seminar finished with a review of the Business School’s recent developments before guests attended a networking dinner. Taiwan Alumni Hold AGM and Annual Dinner
The CUHK Business School Taiwan Alumni Association held a dinner and its third Annual General Meeting on 29 April at Taipei’s Grand Hotel, welcoming over 100 guests. Throughout the evening, attendees feasted on a delicious meal of traditional Taiwanese delicacies and enjoyed entertaining programs. Alumni also elected a new Executive Committee. Ms. Florence Lai, Alumni and Corporate Affairs Director, expressed her wish to work closely with the new committee members to build a stronger alumni network in Taiwan. Thriving Despite Challenges
Jeffrey Hui (BBA 2005, EMBA 2016) has conquered difficulties to create a thriving career as one of Hong Kong’s premiere marketing and management experts. Over the years, he has held many positions, including radio host, consultant and columnist. He also founded a successful digital marketing business, working with brands like L'Oréal, Nestlé and Google. Presently, he is busy writing books, serving as an adjunct lecturer at CUHK and overseeing an educational charity. Though Jeffrey knows challenges lay ahead, he believes it is possible to overcome setbacks while growing stronger. Read more here, or click here to view his insightful video.
Management Accounting Summit Brings Industry Leaders to Hong Kong
Business School alumni are encouraged to join the North Asia Management Accounting Leaders’ Summit 2017, which takes place Tuesday, 13 June at the Cheng Yu Tung Building. By creating a platform for businesses, academics, regulators and professionals, the summit promotes best practices in management accounting. Over 300 finance professionals are expected to attend and it is co-organised by CUHK Business School and the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. CUHK MBA Programme Rises Above the Competition
The Financial Times recently released its first list of top MBA degrees in finance, and CUHK Business School was ranked as the second best in Asia and 14th in the world on a list of 50 programmes. Additionally, the CUHK MBA took first place in Asia for career progress, and also ranked highly for salary growth and value for money, thanks to an outstanding curriculum and the faculty’s dedication to providing students with exceptional career counselling. Reaching Out During the Dragon Boat Festival
The charity Run to Your Home helped elderly residents of Shamshuipo and Kowloon City celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival during two recent weekends. Teams of EMBA alumni and students, as well as their families, visited elderly people living alone, giving them gifts of fruit, rice dumplings and “sunny dolls,” which are said to bring beautiful weather. The volunteers also spent time talking with the elderly residents, providing a much-needed chance to socialise. Click here to share the happy memories.

Reinventing Education in Hong Kong
Business School alumna Jacqueline So, who earned a BBA in professional accountancy in 2001, moved from mainland China to Hong Kong at age 12. There, she discovered a different approach to learning, with students encouraged to study music, exercise regularly and participate in various activities. Hoping to change education in Asia, she studied at CUHK, earned an MBA at Harvard and paired with a UK boarding school to open Malvern College Hong Kong. Read about her inspiring journey here.
Students and Alumni Discover Japan
This April, a group of 28 MBA students and alumni travelled to Osaka, Japan, for an educational study tour. For several days, they learned about local business culture and practices by visiting successful corporations, including Panasonic and Peach Aviation. They also met with representatives from different industries, who generously shared their wisdom. Finally, the group enjoyed a day of sightseeing and a visit to a local whisky distillery before returning to Hong Kong. Read more here.
Risking Life and Limb to Help Others
Jason Yip has dedicated himself to humanitarian causes through his work with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Over the years, he has spent time in Afghanistan, Myanmar and Palestine, helping victims of armed conflict and violence. On 7 April, he discussed his experiences during “A Hongkonger in Global Humanitarian Work,” a seminar organised by the BBA Alumni Association as part of the Round the Globe Series. China’s Economy, Corporate Governance and Finance
A study by Professor Wu Donghui and Professor Gu Zhaoyang looks at how political incentives motivate Chinese officials to intervene in the operation of state-owned enterprises. Professor Zhang Tianyu comments on a bold move by Tianjin Realty’s shareholders, who voted to keep the Communist Party out of their organisational structure. To stay on top, DBS Bank has transformed into a digital bank and remained competitive with technology giants.
